Petersham Nurseries, at the foot of Richmond Hill (then down a bumpy dirt track) is what you might call a ‘rus in urbe’, or an oasis in the midst of a bustling ‘burb. Garden centre doesn’t do it justice; this place has ambience, it’s chic and very, very unique. It also has a tearoom and Michelin starred restaurant to boot.
This was the chosen venue, on a bright sunny, cold and frosty January morning, for our first 2016 team meeting. With much to discuss (packaging designs, our recent photo shoots, the new website, and ideas going forward) the hand-roasted coffee, pots of tea and homemade cakes in The Teahouse helped the creative process enormously.
After catching up on work plans, we meandered over to the Garden Shop. Cue silence and awe, for this is not your average garden centre shop…
Things we fell in love with included: a cloche dome filled with Victorian style ephemera, scented candles by Astier De Villatte, and hand screen-printed flower press kits.
At this time of year, you’ll find an array of brightly coloured cyclamen, ferns, succulents, orchids, and small citrus trees. There’s also an increasing range of evergreen hanging plants – ideal for garden-less gardeners!
Be warned, there’s a possibility you’ll leave with more plants than you intended, a vintage beehive and completely rethinking your garden design and home interior. Either way, Petersham Nurseries serves oodles of inspiration, wonderment and great cakes. Go there, as soon as possible!
